UAF is the nation’s Arctic University and CNSM plays a special role in educating undergraduate and graduate students who will become leaders in Arctic research. With climate change at the forefront of people’s minds and concerns, there is a lot of research into how climate change is and will affect arctic regions as well as the entire Earth system.
Arctic research crosses over into all of our disciplines from using math to create models of glacial melt to studying the “greening” of the arctic as plants and shrubbery change on the tundra. Because of our unique role, our students are able to learn from and collaborate with researchers all over the circumpolar north. There are also opportunities for our students to study abroad in other arctic or even antarctic regions.
