Juneau Fisheries Seminar – T. Stephens: “Ecophysiological strategies that facilitate Giant Kelp persistence in nitrogen-limited regimes”

December 8 @ 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM

UAF College of Fisheries & Ocean Sciences, Fisheries Department Seminar:

“Ecophysiological strategies that facilitate Giant Kelp persistence in nitrogen-limited regimes” by Tiffany Stephens, UAF/CFOS

ABSTRACT: Giant Kelp, Macrocystis pyrifera, is what its name implies: giant. It’s also a cosmopolitan species. Giant × Cosmopolitan = mega biomass, and despite the high nutrient requirement to support such biomass, Macrocystis populations persist in nitrogen-limited regimes along temperate coastlines in both hemispheres. In this seminar, I will share with you some strategies and mechanisms that support the growth of this charismatic megaflora.
